(2011–2012)

A selection of captured moments with little or no editing. Some function as video wallpapers, calling attention to our short attention spans, lack of time and over exposure to media. Others offer a glimpse of narrative, their preface and prologue left to the imagination of the viewer.

		<description>Le Couteau (The Knife)
(2011 / Grand Hornu / Fabrica)

This piece is part of Fabrica's 'Objet Préféré' (29 May – 23 October 2011, Grand-Hornu), the result of a workshop at Grand-Hornu in Belgium, September 2010. The collection consists of furniture that reflect personal stories relating to the favourite objects of Grand-Hornu staff.

'Le Couteau' (The Knife) is the favourite object of Michel De Cubber. It has special meaning for him through the multi-generational family tradition of an ornamental knife being given from father to son as a symbol recognising the transition to adulthood. 'The knife for me is first of all an object to pass on, from father to son. To me it’s not a weapon at all, it’s a tool to share bread with family members.'

'Le Couteau' is a dinner table with a long drawer passing through it. The length of the table is shorter than the drawer, meaning something is always offered at either end of the table. The notion of the drawer never closing is a symbol of this transition which is always possible.

130 (w) x 74 (h) x 74 (d) cm.

		<description>L'Objet Produit (The Produced Object)
(2011 / Grand Hornu / Fabrica)

'L'Objet Produit' consists of 11 objects illustrated 20 times each, under a strict system of hand-rendered replication. The 220 piece collection explores ownership, non-mechanical construction and human error.

The series was created for Fabrica's 'Objet Préféré' collection (29 May – 23 October 2011, Grand-Hornu),
the result of a workshop at Grand-Hornu in Belgium, September 2010. The exhibition consists of works that represent personal stories relating to the favourite objects of Grand-Hornu staff.

For 'Objet Produit', photographs of selected belongings became source material for an assembly-line method of visual reproduction, in a process designed to reflect Grand-Hornu's history as a manual labour intensive factory in the 1800's. A regimented production schedule was adhered to: one collection (20 frames) per single working day (9 am – 7 pm), consecutive days until completion.

Each object is illustrated faithfully to the supplied photograph (frame 01) and traced as accurately as possible without reference to the original photograph. Frame 01 is discarded, the copy (frame 02) becoming the new template, which is traced and in turn discarded also. This cycle is repeated 19 times.

Finally, each print is given a name, to signify its status as a belonging by a multitude of owners.

Pen. 297 x 420 mm.
